At the beginning of Queen Victoria's reign, a proper bathroom with plumbed-in appliances was something of a rarity even in the houses of the aristocracy, yet by 1900 the provision of bathrooms was almost universal in all classes of dwelling. Quick to meet the demand for appliances to furnish these new bathrooms, the companies that manufactured the baths, water closets and washbasins (or 'lavatories', as the Victorians called them) produced large and magnificent catalogues. In detailed line engravings and vivid colour illustrations, often reproduced to an extremely high standard, they presented a wealth of appliances that. could transform the humblest water closet into a temple of hygiene. Drawings in plan, section and perspective showed the reader the goods from every angle, while the text spelled out in sonorous prose the advantages of the 'Triton', the 'Niagara' or the 'Tornado' closet and the 'Cleopatra', the 'Empress' or the Patent Steamless' bath. Suggested schemes for complete bathrooms combined polished marble, gleaming tiles, painted porcelain and shining metalwork to stunning effect.
